Description

This beautiful town or "white village" is perhaps one of the most important towns in the area, due to being an strategic enclave since the Phoenicians arrived 3.000 years ago. We must take into account, it is half way between the Bay of Cádiz and Los Alcornocales Natural Park. Therefore, the views of the bay and the mountains from this town are exceptional, and very useful for armies centuries s ago, as the path from South to North, could be controlled from the top of the town.

Medina Sidonia was the place of settlement of ancient civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Romans,Byzantines, Visigoths and Muslims. That is why, we will have a walk through the town from the very top to Plaza de España, and then visit the Roman Remains, in order to show you a little bit of this beautiful town and its history.

Once we have finished visiting the town, it is time to head to Los Alcornocales Nature Park for a walk along an impressive short trail and at the same time very intense due to the exuberant vegetation, typical of other latitudes and that shows how it has survived in this area for millions of years.

It is important to highlight that the existing humidity favors the existence of vegetation and wildlife, some in danger of extinction, such as some of the toads in Laguna del Picacho. This humidity also makes it possible for filamentous algae to grow. The lagoon is an obligatory stopping point due to the reflected image of the Picacho peak.

Through the path, in addition to nature, visitors will be able to observe details of activities that took place within the area, such as the collection of cork, hunting, livestock and how coal was obtained in the past, as well as baking bread.

The gorge is formed by the Canuto of Puerto Oscuro, the birthplace of the Barbate River and where other stops are mandatory to enjoy the small waterfalls and take impressive photos of the landscape.
